IIEc-UNAM – UNAM-Reino Unido – Universidad de Glasgow – CIDE

Welcome

The Instituto de Investigaciones Económicas of the UNAM with the support of UNAM-UK, the CIDE, and the University of Glasgow convene the International Seminar. The theoretical legacy of Adam Smith 300 years after his birth, in commemoration of the birth of Adam Smith (1723-1790). This academic event will provide an opportunity to analyze and discuss issues related to Adam Smith's theoretical legacy and debate its relevance today.

Justification

At the invitation of the UNAM in the United Kingdom in response to a call from the University of Glasgow, Smith's alma mater, the Institute of Economic Research - UNAM joins various institutions of higher education around the world in commemorating the 300th anniversary of the birth of Adam Smith with this multidisciplinary seminar given by specialists, attended by academics, students and the general public, interested in analyzing and deepening their knowledge of the theoretical legacy of Smith, considered the founder or father of modern economics.

Adam Smith's writings cover philosophical, political, and economic aspects. The Seminar will explore their relevance for the elucidation of some of today's economic and social problems. Starting from well-known concepts such as "the invisible hand", the division of labor, and self-interest, this Seminar will also seek to test certain commonplaces through a re-reading of the original sources, of Smith's works, in particular, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776), better known as The Wealth of Nations and The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), as well as reflections on the specific context in which Smith wrote. To this end, a warm invitation is extended to join the Global Reading Group organized by the University of Glasgow which will provide material and guidance for this purpose.
